Grief and Loss

We experience many losses as we move through life.  Some we take in stride and others cause us untold pain.  It may be the loss of a loved one, a job, a home, a relationship, health, children who grow and leave home, and other changes in our situation.  Some we accept easily and others stress us terribly.  Some we grieve and move through to peace and others stay with us and affect our daily lives, relationships, and happiness.

The process of grieving takes time.  The amount of time is unique to each person.  The time to seek help is when you feel stuck or unable to handle it.

A case study follows:

A eighteen year old woman learned she has a mental condition for which she will have to take medication her whole life.  She grieved the normal life she thought she would have.  She grew angry, stopped taking her medication, spent time in a hospital.  She was encouraged to join a group to meet with others who had her condition and she needed to  learn coping skills to take care of the times she felt worse about her situation.  She felt so different from everyone else.
She didn't know how to talk to others in her family about her fears, her loneliness, her dismay about not being able to have children while on medication.  In therapy she learned her feelings were normal for her situation.  She learned that others have gone through the same fears and feelings she had.  She learned to keep track of and manage her symptoms, and eventually she learned to counter her thoughts and to use humor.
